Check this guy out.

He makes a couple of points... in a super round-about way. I think.

As a surfer who rides a SUP, I obviously take issue with some of his comments, but my biggest beef with the anti-SUP lobby has always been the whole SUP=kook assumption. I follow the etiquette rules. When it gets crowded, I stay on the shoulder or inside because I don't like to fight with other people for a wave. That's why I love my standup board; while a perfect wave is what I’m always looking for, I can have more fun on more waves without being so reliant on perfect conditions. I'm glad he's taking the attitude "do what makes you happy" because that’s all I want.

wow this guy said it very well! what sucks is i was guilty of many of what points he mentioned in my early SUS days. Seeing the SUS crowd growing daily I can just feel the problems coming our way like run away train considering the vast majority of SUS guys on the water are not super informed or sensitive to the tensions outlined in this video...

Yah, he has Has some good points, but He still just dosn't get it, He says Were not surfers, Give Me a break, its not Easy & it is surfing, only Everthing Is more, like the drop, the thrill, the speed & most of all the work out !! at least thats the way i feel, he's right though we all should show respect, no matter what we ride. were all in it for the same reasons, we love the water & how it makes us feel

The comments made on this video describe what is wrong with humanity. Greed and the feeling of ownership is everywhere. This exact same scene has played out many times: snow boarding vs. skiing, skinny ski's vs. fat ski's, long boards vs. short boards, boogey boards vs. surfboards, etc. The answer is basic respect for all. But that is probably too much to ask for. The ocean and it's waves are owned by no one and are there to be appreciated by anyone. I have many friends that have been in the water since the sixties and they have long boards, short boards, paddle boards, kite boards & sail boards. They all surf.

LOL, John, I did not know you saw him first!
Here's what I just posted on YouTube...

Man, just listened to your whole schtick & felt an overwhelming urge to tell you to shut the F-UP. Your rant reinforces what everyone thinks of SoCal surfers. Stereotypical Spicoli-airhead-whining is an embarrassment to the legacy of SoCal’s surfing best.

This spanking from a surfing, boogie-boarding, bodysurfing, SUPing, proud-2-b-a-KOOK in NorCal; a still hot grandma who grew up a few miles from your trailer in the leash-free 60’s; north of the Golden Gate since 1980.
Shut up & surf! ;-D

Wow! That's some feedback... I run up to the desert for a couple days and come back to a fired up readership.

I too- hate the SUP=Kook way of thinking... "A kook is a kook no matter what they're riding" That's what I believe.

Aside from the fact that this could have been said in less time, I consider this man's comments to be very articulate and open minded. I do both trad and SUP. Respect and honest assessment of ability have been missing ingredients for some SUP surfers, but honestly I already see it working itself out. I see fewer embarressing situations with SUP than I did a year ago, so I think that people are figuring out the appropriate context for SUP.

OMG what a Lebowski. Doesn't matter what the guy has to say; the subtext of his delivery is Stoner Loser. Everything about this guy is obsolete, from his style of surfing to his style of speaking. All you're witnessing here is the death-spasm of his tiny little world. He's too addlepated to grasp what's happening around him. This is what happens when people become so smug and nostalgic and invested in the established forms that they become impermeable to change. I feel sorry for the guy. On the other hand, he's the funniest thing I've seen in a while. I would like to think that his schtick was some genius work of self-parody; alas, I fear it is not.

Anonymous: You sir are a genius.

Especially this comment: "This is what happens when people become so smug and nostalgic and invested in the established forms that they become impermeable to change."

And the funny (ironic?) thing is that they claim to be the most open minded when in fact they are the most resistant to change of all!

Ha! Javi... right on... huffing it up!

what a dork. I am getting tired of the stink eye. I'm out there looking for waves like everybody else. I share the surf and show respect for those around me as long as it is a mutual respect. Like many SUP surfers, I've been in the water for 30 years + paying my dues or whatever, f..ing "hierarchy". I would snake that guy in a second and lose no sleep at all because he would do the same to me. game on dumb ass. Maybe he should take his leash off, and remove his fins and get the redwood plank out.

charlie sheen is a rock star from mars that dude on the sup rant needs to take lessons from are man sheen to get a point across

I kind of feel sorry for the guy, he's most likely a patient at the local "wellness" clinic and it appears that his trailer he lives in is quite small, still I'd snake him in a heartbeat.

Getting along in the lineup. It's the name of the game no matter what you ride. Due to bad shoulders from so many years of paddling, I've had to surf what I could...and I've always managed to get along even when others on the same gear couldn't. There will alway be an a hole or two in the line up that insists on thinking small. Some ride sup's, some ride wave skiis and some are trad. We all get old and sore in the end. Just have some fun and enjoy the ride, 'cause in the end, it's a short one.
